The Characteristics of God Defined
Wonderful- excite wonder or admiration; exciting surprise; strange; astonishing.
Mighty- Very strong; valiant; bold; Very powerful; having great command.
Strong- having ability to bear or endure; firm; solid; as a constitution strong enough to bear the fatigues of a campaign; Well fortified; able to sustain attacks; not easily subdued or taken; powerful; Having great wealth, means or resources; Well established; firm; not easily overthrown or altered; Able; furnished with abilities; Having great force of mind, of intellect or of any faculty; as a man of strong powers of mind; a man of a strong mind or intellect; a man of strong memory, judgment or imagination.
Awe- Fear mingled with admiration or reverence; reverential fear; dread inspired by something great, or terrific; to influence by fear, terror or respect.
Peace- In a general sense, a state of quiet or tranquility; freedom from disturbance or agitation; Freedom from internal commotion; Freedom from private quarrels, or disturbance; Freedom from agitation or disturbance by the passions, as from fear, terror, anger, anxiety or the like; quietness of mind; tranquility; calmness; quiet of conscience; Harmony; Public tranquility; that quiet, order and security which is guaranteed by the laws;
Perfect- Finished; complete; not defective; a perfect work; a perfect system; Fully informed; completely skilled; Complete in moral excellencies; To finish or complete so as to leave nothing wanting;
Protector- One that defends or shields from injury, evil or oppression; a defender; a guardian.
Complete- Having no deficiency; perfect; to complete hopes or desires; To fulfill; to accomplish.
Healer- He or that which cures, or restores to soundness.
Counselor- One who is authorized by natural relationship, or by birth, office or profession, to advise another in regard to his future conduct and measures.
Restorer- One that returns what is lost or unjustly detained; one who repairs or re-establishes.
Great- Chief; of vast power and excellence; supreme; illustrious; as the great God; the great Creator; Vast; extensive; wonderful; admirable; Distinguished by rank, office or power; elevated; eminent; Rich; sumptuous; magnificent; Dignified; noble.
Good- That which contributes to diminish or remove pain, or to increase happiness or prosperity; benefit; advantage; opposed to evil or misery; welfare; prosperity; advancement of interest or happiness; Spiritual advantage or improvement; Moral works; actions which are just and in conformity to the moral law or divine precepts; Moral qualities; virtue; righteousness; The best fruits; richness; abundance; Valid; legally firm; not weak or defective; having strength adequate to its support; sound; not weak, false or fallacious; Complete or sufficiently perfect in its kind; having the physical qualities best adapted to its design and use; opposed to bad, imperfect, corrupted, impaired; Having moral qualities best adapted to its design and use, or the qualities which God's law requires; virtuous; pious; religious; opposed to bad, wicked, evil; Conformable to the moral law; virtuous; Proper; fit; convenient; seasonable; well adapted to the end.; Sound; perfect; uncorrupted; undamaged. Holy- Properly, whole, entire or perfect, in a moral sense. Hence, pure in heart, temper or dispositions; free from sin and sinful affections; perfectly pure, immaculate and complete in moral character; consecrated or set apart to a sacred use; Proceeding from pious principles, or directed to pious purposes; as holy zeal; Perfectly just and good; Sacred;
A Father- He who begets a child; The first ancestor; the progenitor of a race or family; The appellation of an old man, and a term of respect; One who feeds and supports or exercises paternal care over another; he who creates, invents, makes or composes any thing; the author, former or contriver; a founder, director or instructor; The appellation of the first person in the adorable Trinity; Adoptive father, he who adopts the children of another, and acknowledges them as his own; Natural father, the father of illegitimate children.
A Friend- One who is attached to another by affection; one who entertains for another sentiments of esteem, respect and affection, which lead him to desire his company, and to seek to promote his happiness and prosperity; opposed to foe or enemy; One not hostile; opposed to an enemy in war; One reconciled after enmity; An attendant; a companion.
Unchanging- Not changing; suffering no alteration.
Infinite- Without limits; unbounded; boundless; not circumscribed; applied to time, space and qualities. God is infinite in duration, having neither beginning nor end of existence. He is also infinite in presence, or omnipresent, and his perfections
Omnipotent- Almighty; possessing unlimited power; all powerful; Having unlimited power of a particular kind; as omnipotent love.
Omnipresent- Present in all places at the same time.
Omniscient- Having universal knowledge or knowledge of all things; infinitely knowing; all-seeing.
Love- In a general sense to be pleased with; to regard with affection, on account of some qualities which excite pleasing sensations or desire of gratification. We love a friend, on account of some qualities which give us pleasure in his society. We love a man who has done us a favor; in which case, gratitude enters into the composition of our affection. We love our parents and our children, on account of their connection with us, and on account of many qualities which please us. We love to retire to a cool shade in summer. We love a warm room in winter. we love to hear an eloquent advocate. The Christian loves his Bible. In short, we love whatever gives us pleasure and delight, whether animal or intellectual; and if our hearts are right, we love God above all things, as the sum of all excellence and all the attributes which can communicate happiness to intelligent beings. In other words, the Christian loves God with the love of complacency in his attributes, the love of benevolence towards the interest of his kingdom, and the love of gratitude for favors received; To have benevolence or good will for; An affection of the mind excited by beauty and worth of any kind, or by the qualities of an object which communicate pleasure, sensual or intellectual. It is opposed to hatred. Love is excited by pleasing qualities of any kind, as by kindness, benevolence, charity, and by the qualities which render social intercourse agreeable. In the latter case, love is ardent friendship, or a strong attachment springing from good will and esteem, and the pleasure derived from the company, civilities and kindness of others. The love of God is the first duty of man, and this springs from just views of his attributes or excellencies of character, which afford the highest delight to the sanctified heart. Esteem and reverence constitute ingredients in this affection, and a fear of offending him is its inseparable effect; Benevolence; good will.
Gracious- Favorable; kind; friendly; benevolent; merciful; disposed to forgive offenses and impart unmerited blessings; expressing kindness and favor; Proceeding from divine grace; as a person in a gracious state; Acceptable; favored; Renewed or implanted by grace; as gracious affections; Virtuous; good; Excellent; graceful; becoming.
Kind- Disposed to do good to others, and to make them happy by granting their requests, supplying their wants or assisting them in distress; having tenderness or goodness of nature; benevolent; benignant; Proceeding from tenderness or goodness of heart; benevolent; as a kind act; a kind return of favors.
Sovereign- Supreme in power; possessing supreme dominion; as a sovereign ruler of the universe; Supreme; superior to all others; chief; effectual; SOVEREIGN- A supreme lord or ruler; one who possesses the highest authority without control. Some earthly princes, kings and emperors are sovereigns in their dominions; A supreme magistrate; a king.
Merciful- Having or exercising mercy; compassionate; tender; disposed to pity offenders and to forgive their offenses; unwilling to punish for injuries; Compassionate; tender; unwilling to give pain; not cruel.
Faithful- Firm in adherence to the truth and to the duties of religion; Firmly adhering to duty; of true fidelity; loyal; true to allegiance; constant in the performance of duties or services; exact in attending to commands; Observant of compact, treaties, contracts, vows or other engagements; true to one's word.; True; exact; in conformity to the letter and spirit; Conformable to truth; Constant; not fickle; worthy of belief.
Patient- The quality of enduring evils without murmuring or fretfulness; Not easily provoked; calm under the sufferance of injuries or offenses; not revengeful; Persevering; constant in pursuit or exertion; calmly diligent; Not hasty; not over eager or impetuous; waiting or expecting with calmness or without discontent.
Wise- Properly, having knowledge; hence, having the power of discerning and judging correctly, or of discriminating between what is true and what is false; between what is fit and proper, and what is improper; as a wise prince; a wise magistrate; Discrete and judicious in the use or applications of knowledge; choosing laudable ends, and the best means to accomplish them. Skillful; Godly; pious; Dictated or guided by wisdom; containing wisdom; judicious; well adapted to produce good effects; applicable to things;
A Comfort- To strengthen; to invigorate; to cheer or enliven; To strengthen the mind when depressed or enfeebled; to console; to give new vigor to the spirits; to cheer, or relieve from depression, or trouble; Relief from pain; ease; rest or moderate pleasure after pain, cold or distress or uneasiness of body. Relief from distress of mind; the ease and quiet which is experienced when pain, trouble, agitation or affliction ceases. It implies also some degree of positive animation of the spirits; or some pleasurable sensations derived from hope, and agreeable prospects; consolation; Support; consolation under calamity, distress or danger; That which gives strength or support in distress, difficulty, danger, or infirmity; In law, support; assistance; countenance; encouragement; That which gives security from want and furnishes moderate enjoyment; as the comforts of life.
Lord- A master; a person possessing supreme power and authority; a ruler; a governor; A husband; in scripture, the Supreme Being; Jehovah. When Lord, in the Old Testament, is prints in capitals, it is the translation of JEHOVAH, and so might, with more propriety, be rendered.
Master- A man who rules, governs or directs either men or business. A director, head, or chief manager; The owner; proprietor; with the idea of governing; a ruler; one who has supreme dominion; A chief; a principal; One who has possession, and the power of controlling or using at pleasure; a teacher; an instructor; One uncontrolled; An appellation of respect; A man eminently or perfectly skilled in any occupation, art or science; To execute with skill; To rule; to govern; to excel.
Teacher- One who teaches or instructs; An instructor; a preceptor; one whose business or occupation is to instruct others.
Just- orderly; due; suitable; Exactly proportioned; proper; Full; complete to the common standard; true; In a moral sense, upright; honest; having principles of rectitude; or conforming exactly to the laws, and to principles of rectitude in social conduct; equitable in the distribution of justice; as a just judge; In an evangelical sense, righteous; religious; influenced by a regard to the laws of God; or living in exact conformity to the divine will; Conformed to rules of justice; doing equal justice; Conformed to truth; exact; proper; accurate; founded in truth and fact; Innocent; blameless; without guilt; True to promises; faithful; Impartial; allowing what is due; giving fair representation of character, merit or demerit.
Judge- A civil officer who is invested with authority to hear and determine causes, civil or criminal, between parties, according to his commission; The Supreme Being; One who has skill to decide on the merits of a question, or on the value of any thing; one who can discern truth and propriety; To compare facts or ideas, and perceive their agreement or disagreement, and thus to distinguish truth from falsehood; To hear and determine, as in causes on trial; to pass sentence; To discern; to distinguish; to consider accurately for the purpose of forming an opinion or conclusion; To hear and determine a case; to examine and decide; To try; to examine and pass sentence on; Rightly to understand and discern; To rule or govern.
Righteous- Just; accordant to the divine law.
A Sustainer– One who bears; upholds; supports; as, a foundation sustains the superstructure; pillars sustain an edifice; a beast sustains a load; To hold; to keep from falling; To support; to keep from sinking in despondence; To maintain; to keep alive; to support; to subsist; To support in any condition by aid; to assist or relieve; to endure without failing or yielding.
Truth- Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be; True state of facts or things; Conformity of words to thoughts, which is called moral truth; Veracity; purity from falsehood; practice of speaking truth; habitual disposition to speak truth; Correct opinion.; Fidelity; constancy; Honesty; virtue; Exactness; conformity to rule; Real fact of just principle; real state of things. There are innumerable truths with which we are not acquainted; Sincerity; The truth of God, is his veracity and faithfulness; Jesus Christ is called the truth.
Light- Life; Illumination of mind; instruction; knowledge; Means of knowing; Open view; a visible state; a state of being seen by the eye, or perceived, understood or known; Explanation; illustration; means of understanding; In Scripture, God, the source of knowledge; Christ; Joy; comfort; felicity; Saving knowledge; Prosperity; happiness; Support; comfort; deliverance; The gospel; The understanding or judgment; The gifts and graces of Christians; A good king, the guide of his people; Bright; clear; not dark or obscure; as, the morning is light; the apartment is light; In colors, white or whitish; There is no greater argument of a light and inconsiderate person, than profanely to scoff at religion.

Perfect- Finished; complete; consummate; not defective; having all that is requisite to its nature and kind; as a perfect statue; a perfect likeness; a perfect work; a perfect system; Fully informed; completely skilled; Complete in moral excellencies; Manifesting perfection; To finish or complete so as to leave nothing wanting; to instruct fully; to make fully skillful;
Glorious- Illustrious; of exalted excellence and splendor; resplendent in majesty and divine attributes; applied to God.; Noble; excellent; renowned; celebrated; illustrious; very honorable;
Eternal- Without beginning or end of existence; Without end of existence or duration; everlasting; endless; immortal; Perpetual; ceaseless; continued without intermission; Unchangeable; existing at all times without change; as eternal truth; An appellation of God.
Compassionate- Having a temper or disposition to pity; inclined to show mercy; merciful; having a heart that is tender, and easily moved by the distresses, sufferings, wants and infirmities of others; To pity; to commiserate; to have compassion for.
Forgiving- Pardoning; remitting; Disposed to forgive; inclined to overlook offenses; mild; merciful; compassionate; as a forgiving temper.
Power- Force; strength; energy; the power of thinking, comparing and judging; the reasoning powers; Ability, natural or moral; Force; strength; momentum; Influence; Command; the right of governing, or actual government; dominion; rule, sway; authority; One invested with authority; a ruler; a civil magistrate; Legal authority; warrant; In Scripture, right; privilege; Christ is called the power of God, as through him and his gospel, God displays his power and authority in ransoming and saving sinners.
Strength- Firmness; solidity or toughness; the quality of bodies by which they sustain the application of force without breaking or yielding; ower or vigor of any kind; Power of resisting attacks; fastness; Support; that which supports; that which supplies strength; security; Spirit; animation; Legal or moral force; validity; the quality of binding, uniting or securing; That which supports; confidence; Soundness; force; the quality that convinces, persuades or commands assent;
Majestic- Splendid; grand; Elevated; lofty.
Sufficient- Enough; equal to the end proposed; adequate to wants; competent; Qualified; competent; possessing adequate talents or accomplishments; as Fit; able; of competent power or ability.
